Understanding Foot and Ankle Tendonitis

Tendonitis is one of the most common causes of foot and ankle pain. It occurs when the tendons—the thick, fibrous cords that attach your muscles to your bones—become inflamed, irritated, or suffer from microscopic tears due to overuse or injury.

Common Types of Foot Tendonitis

While there are many tendons in the feet, we most frequently treat:

  • Achilles Tendonitis: Pain at the back of the heel or lower calf.

  • Posterior Tibial Tendonitis: Pain along the inner side of the ankle and arch.

  • Peroneal Tendonitis: Pain on the outer edge of the ankle and foot.

  • Extensor Tendonitis: Pain on the top of the foot, often aggravated by tight shoes.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you are experiencing any of the following, you may have tendonitis:

  • A dull, localized ache that worsens with activity.

  • Morning stiffness in the foot or ankle.

  • Swelling or a "thickened" appearance of the tendon.

  • Tenderness when the area is touched or squeezed.

Treatment and Recovery

Most cases of tendonitis respond well to conservative (non-surgical) treatments when addressed early. In cases where the tendon has suffered significant tearing or if conservative methods do not provide relief, our surgical team offers advanced, minimally invasive procedures to repair the tissue and restore your mobility.
